History of the Building
This house is called the "House of Ivan Val'kh" and is famous and significant because the great Alexander Griboyedov lived and wrote in it from 1816 to 1818. Griboyedov began writing "Woe from Wit" here (inspired by a translation of a French play recommended to him by Prince A. Shakhovskoy, his friend who lived in the house opposite, across the canal) and many of the leading liberals of St. Petersburg visited him. All members of the "Union of Salvation," Decembrists, and even Pushkin, who was friends with Kaverin, Griboyedov's best friend.
Cultural Landmark
It is believed that an old usurer named Alena Ivanovna lived in our house, yes, the same one from Dostoevsky's "Crime and Punishment." In 2001, the house was included in the list of newly discovered cultural landmarks. The apartment windows offer a unique view of the embankment of the Griboyedov Canal and the domes of the St. Nicholas Naval Cathedral.
Location
If you leave the entrance to Middle Pod"yacheskaya Street and turn right, you will come to the embankment of the canal. From here, it's about a 3-minute walk to the Mariinsky Theatre. If you turn left from the entrance, at the end of the street, you will also come to the embankment of the Griboyedov Canal, as the house is in a loop of the canal, and the three Pod'yacheskiye Streets intersect it like an island. Right there on the embankment is the Lion Bridge, one of the three surviving pedestrian chain bridges in St. Petersburg.
